Jason Haam is pleased to present Dark Night of the Soul, a group exhibition featuring works by Marie Cloquet, Thierry de Cordier, Robert Mapplethorpe, Pietro Roccasalva, Emily Mae Smith, Rudolf Stingel, Mircea Suciu, and Mary Weatherford. 

The exhibition takes its title from St. John of the Cross’s 16^th-century poem of the same name ‘La noche oscura del alma’—but also from Thierry de Cordier’s work “En una noche oscura…” (Canciones de el alma) (2002-2015), which is included in the exhibition. In the poem, the narrator describes a spiritual journey towards a union with God. The metaphorical contents of the poem—of the path from darkness to light—is visually mirrored in de Cordier’s work. The monumentality of the painting envelops the viewer within the deep-blue void, built upon text from the poem. Both the poem and de Cordier’s work, culminate with a process of salvation and revelation—of finding light, guided by darkness. 

Much like de Cordier’s seminal work, the works in the exhibition are silent and brooding and possess an infinite depth, which unveils the existential nature of the human experience. Dark Night of the Soul brings together a group of monochromatic works that find commonality in a form of climax and revelation of emotional intensity, brought on by a sense of darkness.Their experiences are rooted, not in the mundanities and indifferences of life, but in the extremities of emotion—of subliminal fear and awe—that make life worth living. And it is only through this sense of journey are these experiences fulfilled, and only through darkness is the soul laid bare—as darkness has a way of revealing things obscured by light.

제이슨함은 2021년의 마지막 전시로 8인의 해외 작가 그룹전 을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 Marie Cloquet, Thierry de Cordier, Robert Mapplethorpe, Pietro Roccasalva, Emily Mae Smith, Rudolf Stingel, Mircea Suciu, 그리고 Mary Weatherford의 작품을 선보이는 자리로  2021년 12월 28일부터 2022년 3월 1일까지 이어진다. 

전시명인 은 16세기 스페인 출신 신부, St. John the Cross의 시 - La noche oscura del alma -의 영문 제목이자, 전시 출품작인 Thierry de Cordier의 “En una noche oscura…” (Canciones de el alma) (2002-2015)에서 인용하였다. 저자는 인간은 누구나 어둡고 불확실한 길을 걷지만, 그 여정의 끝에는 빛으로 인도하는 신이 존재한다고 이야기한다. 우리가 살아가는 삶은 정상이 없는 산을 등산하는 심오한 “여행”과도 같다. 과정에서 넘어지고 미끄러지며 어둠의 늪에 빠질 때도 있지만 끊임없이 전진한다. 우리는 이 땅에 발을 디딘 순간부터 수많은 일을 마주하고 경험한다. 기쁨, 두려움, 슬픔, 경외 그리고 경이로움과 같은 다양한 감정들이 합쳐져 하나의 경험이 되고, 그 경험들이 축적되어 빛을 향해 나아가는 ‘삶의 여정’을 지속하는 것이다. 이러한 내용은 de Cordier의 작품에도 은유적으로 표현되어 있다.

이번 전시는 색감을 과감히 배제한 어두운 단색적인 작품들을 한데 모음으로서, 정서적 격렬함의 마음껏 드러낸다. de Cordier의 작품과 마찬가지로 전시작들은 잔잔하고 고요하며, 다소 음울하기까지 하다. 전시에 참여한 작가들의 경험은, 삶을 향한 평범함과 무관심보다는 감정의 격렬함 즉, 마음속에 잠재한 경외와 두려움에서부터 시작된다. 그리고 그것이 삶을 더 가치 있게 하는 것이다.  

이번 전시에 포함된 작품은 인간 경험의 실존적 본질을 드러내는 다양한 감정의 깊이감을 내포하고 있다.

그리고 이러한 본질은 오로지 삶의 여정을 통한 경험들의 축적으로만 얻어질 수 있다. 어둠이 빛에 의해 가려진 것들을 드러내는 것처럼, 오직 어둠을 통해서만 삶의 모습이 드러난다. ­­­­
