Jason Haam presents 'Karma', a group exhibition of four celebrated Korean painters- Jungwook Kim, Minjung Kim, Mike Lee, and Moka Lee. The show, which will be the gallery’s second exhibition in collaboration with Frieze No.9 Cork Street, will open on the November 2nd and remain on view through the November 18th, 2023. An opening reception will be held in the gallery space on Thursday November 2nd, from 6pm to 8pm.
Karma will feature new and historic works by four important Korean artists- Jungwook Kim, Minjung Kim, Mike Lee and Moka Lee- whose work represent the identity of Korean heritage and generational zeitgeists. Born across four decades from the 1960s to 1990s all four artists are technically accomplished, have unique methodology, and paint with laborious and repetitive layering processes. In a recognisable nod to Korean artistic traditions, most of these works are muted in color, serious in aura, detailed and sophisticated in expression, and sincere in concept.
Minjung Kim (b.1962) is a Korean artist who lives and works in Monaco and New York. Kim studied oriental painting in Seoul before moving to Europe in 1991. Her works are an assemblage of the East and the West. Her paintings recall the visual sensitivity of
Arte Povera yet the artist predominantly works with ‘hanji’, a Korean mulberry paper. The subject matters are diverse, ranging from being optically illusional and minimally abstract. Her works are products of highly disciplined meditation and reductive performance yet successfully seize uplifting facades. This will be the artist’s 12th presentation in London- including six solo exhibitions, with her work most recently being shown at White Cube Mason’s Yard in 2018.
Jungwook Kim (b. 1970) is a Korean ink painter who lives and works in Seoul. Kim studied oriental painting and has been making ink on paper works for more than 30 years. Her works are in the collections of numerous public and private institutions in Korea yet have not previously been exhibited outside of the country. Steeped in the traditions of oriental painting, Kim’s intention is to expand the aesthetic boundaries of ink painting. Her paintings are combinations of and developments from her previous works and consistent contemplation about life, science, religion: fundamentals of thought and the portrayal of self. She is scheduled to have a solo exhibition at the OCI Museum of Art, Seoul, in December 2023.
Mike Lee (b. 1983) is a Korean American artist who lives and works in New York City. Lee makes graphically charged paintings with a wide range of subject matters and predominantly paints figures in a stylized black and white palette. With skills he learnt from being an animator, Lee first exhibited with the help of the celebrated Japanese artist Tomoo Gokita. Being the only Korean American artist in the presentation, Lee offers a comfortable equilibrium between the Korean identity and global viewership. He is scheduled to have a solo exhibition at the Sifang Museum, Shanghai in December 2023.
Moka Lee (b. 1996) is a Korean painter who has recently risen to prominence within the young Korean artist community. Lee represents a generation of young Korean artists who grew up with ubiquitous access to the Internet and social media. Her works reflect on conflicts between one’s innate identity and fabricated persona and touches upon generational traits and tension with a comprehensive narrative. The process of her paintings- which calls attention to that of digital printing- is a compositional layering of multiple oil pigments and an intuitive combination of colors.

‘Karma’는 한국 미술의 정체성과 각 세대의 시대정신을 대변하는 김정욱, 김민정, Mike Lee, 이목하 작가의 작품을 선보입니다. 1960년대부터 1990년대에 이르기까지 각각 다른 연대에 태어난 네 명의 작가들은 기술적으로 매우 뛰어나고, 자신만의 독특한 방법론을 가지며, 수행적이고 반복적인 중첩 과정을 통해 작품을 만들어 낸다는 공통점이 있습니다. 이들의 작품 대부분은 한국화의 오랜 전통과 결을 같이 하는 낮은 채도의 색체를 사용하고, 조금은 무겁고 진지한 분위기를 연출하며, 섬세한 표현방식과 함께 작품에 있어 진실성을 고수합니다.
김민정(b.1962) 작가는 서울에서 동양화를 전공하고 1991년에 유럽으로 이주했으며 현재 뉴욕과 모나코를 오가며 활동하고 있습니다. 그녀의 작품 안에는 동서양적 요소들이 공존하는데, 이는 아르테 포베라(Arte Povera)의 미니멀한 미학을 연상시키지만 주 재료로 한지를 사용하며 다양한 추상적 소재를 아우릅니다. 고도의 수행과 환원 주의적인 행위를 통해 만들어지는 그녀의 작품들은 그 과정과는 별개로 다양하고 풍부한 감정을 전달하는 효과를 갖습니다. 이번 전시는 작가에게 런던에서의 열 두번째 전시이며, 2018년 White Cube Mason’s Yard에서의 전시를 마지막으로 총 여섯 번의 개인전을 개최한 이력이 있습니다.
김정욱(b.1970) 작가는 서울에서 활동하며 먹을 이용한 작업을 하는 동양화가입니다. 작가는 동양화를 공부하였으며, 종이에 먹 작업을 30년 이상 이어가고 있습니다. 그녀의 작품들은 국내의 다양한 기관 및 미술관에 소장되어 있으나 해외에서 전시이력은 상대적으로 제한적입니다.전통적인 동양화에 매진한 작가는 먹 작품의 미적 한계를 확장하고자 하는 의도를 갖고 있습니다. 그녀의 작품들은 전작들을 결합하는 동시에 그로부터 발전하는 형태이며, 자아성찰의 기초가 되는 삶과 과학 및 종교에 관한 지속적인 사색이 담겨있습니다. 그녀는 2023년 12월에 서울의 OCI 미술관에서 개인전이 예정되어 있습니다.
마이크 리(b.1983) 작가는 한국계 미국인으로 뉴욕시에 거주하며 작업하고 있습니다. 작가의 그래픽적 요소로 구성된 회화는 다양한 주제를 탐구하며, 양식화된 흑백의 형상들이 주를 이룹니다. 애니메이션 작가로 일했던 작가는 일본 작가 토무 고키타(Tomoo Gokita)의 도움으로 생애 첫 전시를 열었습니다. 이번 전시의 유일한 한국계 미국인으로서 마이크 리는 한국적 정체성과 국제적 관람객 사이의 안정적인 균형을 제시할 것으로 기대합니다. 작가는 2023년 12월에 상하이의 서방 미술관(Sifang Museum)에서 개인전을 개최할 예정입니다.
이목하(b.1996) 작가는 최근 젊은 한국 작가 커뮤니티에서 급부상한 신진 작가이며, 그녀는 인터넷과 소셜 미디어 사용이 흔하게 이루어지는 젊은 한국 작가 세대를 대표합니다. 본질적 자아와 꾸며진 페르소나 간의 간극을 그린 작가의 작품들은 그녀가 속한 세대 특유의 성격과 갈등을 포괄적인 서사를 통해 조명합니다. 디지털 프린팅과 유사한 그녀의 작업 방식은 유화 물감을 수 겹 중첩시키고 직관적으로 색을 조합하여 이루어집니다.
“한국 미술 시장의 중요성에 반해, 한국 현대미술의 맥락에 대한 글로벌 미술계의 이해가 부족한 것으로 보입니다. 제 갤러리는 유망한 국내 작가들을 발견하고 그들의 다양한 작업을 세계 무대에 선보이겠다는 목표로 시작했습니다. 그들의 작업 전반에 걸쳐 드러나는 공통점을 통해 관람객들은 특정 지역의 관점과 한 국가가 내는 목소리를 이해할 수 있습니다. 이러한 과정은 국제 현대미술계에 있어 굉장히 큰 중요성을 갖습니다.”
