Ella Kruglyanskaya: The Best Arrangement

Jason Haam Gallery is pleased to announce The Best Arrangement, an exhibition of new works by Ella Kruglyanskaya. The show, which will be the first solo exhibition with the gallery, will open on December 2, 2023 and remain on view through January 18, 2024. The 9 paintings on view are dedication and significant advances from the artist’s painterly style.

Known for her stylized figuration, Ella Kruglyanskaya’s paintings almost exclusively portray women. They are representative of the artist’s experienced or expected womanhood. In a nod to the controversial representations of women in visual history, Kruglyanskaya’s full-figured women are hardly unnoticed as they loom larger than life, aggressively occupying the canvas. They are in the midst of an ongoing situation, and they often look back at the gaze of an unseen viewer. Elements of drawing both in general and particular to the artist’s practice reflect the forgiving nature of such act and suggest a way of negotiating such gaze emotionally. In the end, it is what the viewers “feel” through her figures, instead of the narratives these figures “tell.” Kruglyanskaya’s figures painted with expressive brushworks, echoing the gestural canvas behind them, have been an extension and a development of her painterly style. As a way of escaping complacency of her own production, her recent trompe l’oeil still lifes and obtrusive stroke of paint overlaying the figures issues the necessity of self-criticism and endless negotiations through the dramatic process of painting over—to get over what came beforehand.

Ella Kruglyanskaya (b. 1978, Riga, Latvia) received MFA at Yale School of Art, and currently lives and works in New York. Her solo exhibitions were staged at Bortolami, New York; Thomas Dane Gallery, London; Tate Liverpool, Liverpool, UK; Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, New York and Rome. Works by Kruglyanskaya is included in Tate Collection, London, UK, and have been shown in group exhibitions at The Issac Bell House, Providence, Rhode Island; The Aishti Foundation, Beirut, Lebanon; Contemporary Art Centre, Riga, Latvia; The Baltic Triennial, Vilnius, Lithuania; The Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst, Illinois; The Hepworth Wakefield, Hepworth, UK; Pace Gallery, London, UK; and the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive.

제이슨함 갤러리에서 엘라 크루그리얀스카야 (Ella Kruglyanskaya)의 신작들을 선보이는 개인전 ‘The Best Arrangement’를 진행합니다. 전시는 작가와 갤러리가 함께 하는 첫 개인전으로, 2023년 12월 2일부터 2024년 1월 18일까지 진행됩니다. 전시작 9점은 작가의 기존 작품 스타일에 대한 헌신과 동시에 두드러진 발전을 보여줍니다.

엘라 크루그리얀스카야는 특유의 양식을 띈 여성 인물을 주로 그리는 것으로 알려져있습니다. 작가는 이를 통해 여성에 대한 사회적 기대를 탐구하며, 자신의 경험을 투영합니다. 여성성이 부각된 인물들은 실제 사람보다 훨씬 크게 묘사되어 에로틱하기보다는 압도적인 존재감을 강조합니다.이러한 표현 방식을 통해 작가는 시각 예술 역사에서 보여져온 여성의 표상에 대한논란을 제기합니다. 인물들은 진행 중인 상황의 한 장면에 고정된 채로 드러나지 않은 관람객의 시선을 마주보기도 합니다. 이때, 작가는 드로잉 요소를 작업 전반에 걸쳐 포함시키며, 그린다는 행위는 이러한 시선을 감정적으로 타협하는 방법을 제시합니다. 결국 중요한 것은 작품 속 인물이 “말하는” 네러티브가 아닌, 그 인물들을 통해 관람자가 무엇을 “느끼는가”에 초점을 맞추는 것입니다. 생동감 넘치는 붓터치로 그려진 인물들은 캔버스에 이르기까지 이러한 행위적인 울림을 전달하며, 이와 같은 인물표현은 작가의 기존의 그림 스타일을 유지하면서도 새로운 창작방식으로 발전시킵니다. 최근 트롱프뢰유기법으로 완성한 정물화와 인물 위에 중첩된 붓자국은 현재 상태에 안주하지 않으려는 작가의 의지를 반영합니다. 과감한 덧칠 방식을 사용한 창작 과정 또한 작가가 자기 비판의 필요성과 작품 세계의 확장을 추구하고 있음을 드러내는 것입니다.

엘라 크루그리얀스카야 (b. 1978, 리가, 라트비아)는 예일 대학교에서 파인 아트 석사학위(MFA)를 취득했으며 현재 뉴욕에 거주하며 활동하고 있습니다. 작가의 개인전은 볼토라미(뉴욕), 토마스 데인 갤러리(런던), 테이트 리버풀(리버풀, 영국)과 가빈 브라운 엔터프라이즈 (뉴욕&로마)에서 개최되었습니다. 크루그리얀스카야의 작품은 테이트 컬렉션(런던, 영국)에 소장되었으며, 이삭 벨 하우스(로드아일랜드, 미국), 아이쉬티 재단(베이루트, 레바논), 컨템포러리 아트 센터(리가, 라트비아), 발틱 트리에날레(빌뉴스, 리투아니아), 엘름허스트 미술관(일리노이, 미국), 헵워스 웨이크필드(헵워스, 영국), 페이스 갤러리(런던, 영국), 버클리 미술관과 퍼시픽 필름 아카이브에서 개최된 그룹전에서 보여졌습니다.
