Urs Fischer’s new solo exhibition with Gagosian, ‘Beauty,’ will be open to the public from March 5th through May 25th, 2024 at the gallery’s rue de Castiglione location in Paris.
The exhibition showcases new works from Fischer’s ‘Problem Paintings’ (2010–) series, featuring enlarged vintage publicity headshots of popular film actors Jeanne Moreau, Romy Schneider, and Gene Tierney, partially obscured by silkscreened images of flowers. The subjects’ eyes gleam with mystery, while the vibrant colors of the blooms reflect the women’s enigmatic hidden depths. Fischer’s witty clash of images summons the romantic and sexual associations of flowers while hinting at the ephemeral character of glamour and fame; it also evokes the mustache that Marcel Duchamp penciled onto a postcard reproduction of the ’Mona Lisa’ in ’L.H.O.O.Q.’ or ’La Joconde’ (1919).

전시는 작가의 ‘Problem Paintings’ (2010–) 시리즈의 신작을 선보입니다. Jeanne Moreau, Romy Schneider, Gene Tierney와 같이 유명한 영화 배우들의 얼굴을 확대한 고전 사진들은 실크스크린된 꽃 이미지에 의해 일부가 가려집니다. 대상들의 눈은 신비롭게 빛남과 동시에 생기가 넘치는 꽃들은 여성의 깊이를 알 수 없는 내면을 반영합니다. Fischer의 재치 있는 이미지는 꽃이 주는 낭만적이자 성적인 연상을 불러일으키며, 동시에 화려함과 명성의 덧없음를 보여줍니다. 또한, 그의 작품은 마르셀 뒤샹이 엽서의 ‘모나리자’에 콧수염을 그려넣었던 ‘L.H.O.O.Q.’라고도 일컬어지는 ‘La Joconde’(1919)를 떠오르게도 합니다.
